RTI in Secondary Schools

Across the country, educators are beginning to expand RTI to secondary schools. Barbara Ehren, Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Director of the Doctoral Program at the University of Central Florida, provides an orientation to RTI in secondary settings in Response to Intervention in Secondary Schools: Is It on Your Radar Screen?

Charles Hughes and Douglas Dexter of Penn State University review the emerging research base for RTI and present a series of articles summarizing the nature and extent of published research conducted on RTI in Response to Intervention: A Research Review.

Much of the writing and research on RTI has occurred in the area of reading, but RTI is not limited to reading. Amanda VanDerHeyden of Education Research and Consulting, Inc., in Fairhope, Alabama, explores the application of RTI's science of decision making to mathematics instruction in response to this question of the month.

NASDSE's Response to Intervention Blueprint Series
The National Association of State Directors of Special Education has posted two documents in its Response to Intervention Blueprint series for free downloads. Response to Intervention Blueprints for Implementation: District Level and Response to Intervention Blueprints for Implementation: School Building Level are designed to provide a framework around which RTI implementation can be built. The Blueprints, developed jointly by NASDSE and the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE), provide step-by-step implementation guidelines, resources and tips from RTI implementers with many years of experience. RTI National Online Forum
On Monday, June 9, the RTI Action Network presented the inaugural RTI National Online Forum, "Are You Ready for RTI? What Do You Need to Know, and What Do You Need to Do?". Presenters include Drs. Judy Elliott, David Prasse, and Ann Casey. This 90-minute discussion with questions from the audience is invaluable to schools establishing or refining their RTI programs, at both the district and building levels.
